Where to begin? I am in Quito and loving it (as usual). And I am running....so much to do in so little time. I am here for one day only.
There are so any fun places to go and historic things to see. Went to a breakfast meeting in an old hospital that has been converted to an event center. There are many of these in Quito and as this is the 3rd tourism meeting I have been to here it is always a surprise to see that the Ecuadorians have come up with one more.
I escaped the city tour this time as I wanted to see the Botanical Garden. Ecuador has over 4000 species of orchids and I love them all. I have about 18 in my house and am trying to learn how not to kill them. So I am off to see the orchid house.
One of the great things in Ecuador is that cabs are all over the place and the most you pay is $4.00 to go just about anywhere. It costs me a $1.50 to get to the Garden. And what a spectacular display. There are thousands of species all under one roof....orchids...bromiliads...and right outside the door there is a display of cactus like I have never seen. What a spectacular place.!
I have been to Quito so many times now...I actually have friends here and beleive it or not...the brother of a neighbor in Florida also lives here. So rather than do the regular tourist thing, I am off to have drinks at his new penthouse apartment and then dinner with friends at a wonderful Peruvian restaurant.
The view of the city of Quito with its background of snow clad volcanoes is beyond beautiful. As it grows dark....the lights of the city with its lighted monuments and buildings in the historic center lend a spectacular touch!
As a former resident of Peru...dinner at Astrid & Gaston consisted of Cuy(guinea pig) which is one of my favorites. Luckily Ecuador also specializes in this dish so I know I will have more.
So late this evening it is back to my hotel to get ready for another brilliant day in Ecuador. Running again.....before departure for Cuenca tomorrow
