Quietly gliding through the waters of the Danube, we are now aboard what is to be our home for the next week.
Viking Pride is part of a fleet of river barges (read large yachts) that Viking River Cruises has plying the many rivers of Europe and China. Docked under the Chain Bridge we get off and walk around the city, enjoy a beer in a cafe and then take in a nighttime view of the Danube from one of th ramparts of this beautiful old bridge. A big old stone lion, the bridge mascots stares down at me as I gaze upriver and listen to the sounds of the Budapest and the creaking of the bridge.
I was afraid that our little cabin might be too tiny for me and my neighbor Judy, however it proves to be a great size for friends traveling together. Our cabin is right at the water line and so when we look out the window, we almost feel like a flying fish might feel before he jumps back in the stream. The best thing is the sound of the water alongside the hull....a restful swoosh to help us sleep at night.
There is lots to do on board...all related to where we are on the trip. Last night we had a Hungarian musical group and dancers. There is also the proverbial “lounge Lizard” who entertains on board with a myriad of instruments so you can sing along to your favorites if you want.
Touring locally is a must and more often that not we are off the boat seeing things locally.
Today we are off visitng the many palacee and historic churches of Budapeet. This afternoon we are going to learn how to make Apple Strudel as we wind our way upstream to Vienna, Austria.
Right now....I am going to join Judy on deck to watch the historic castles go by on shore and take as many photographs as I can. People are kayaking in the Danube.....wouldn't it be fun to join them?
Next time.....Goodbye Budapest....herre we come Vienna! What a wonderful way to get
around Europe!
