FROM THE AMAZON WITH CARINOS

Wow....little did I realize how really far away from the normal things of life it is in the Amazon. My life as North American came to a dashing halt.......airports with no air conditioning.....no cell phone reception.....no TV....no radio....and worst of all....no email and computers. How do these folks live? Oh well....being the only blonde in a sea of small dark skined people has its advantages. I am 5'2" and for the first time in my life I could see over people's heads.
All things considered....I adjusted very well to my Pisco Sours (favorite drinks of Peruvians) and daily excursions into the wild of the Amazon. Deet is a must if you don't want the little flying "beesties" to nibble at your skin....but soon you forget all that and concetrate on seeing the birds and the animals of the forest. It is the wet season and so 80 percent of the Amazon basin in Peru is flodded. People live in houses on stilts and the animals cling to the tallest trees which have dominated this area for centuries. Nature is an amazing thing! What a joy to just sit quietly and hear the bird symphony accompanied by a frog and cricket chorus. At night the fireflies and the glow worms come out to illuminate the stage. Just spectacular!
Monkeys, sloths and other creatures inhabit the daylight hours as our riverboat plys the waters of the Amazon's headwaters near Iquitos, Peru. I love this. I am one lucky person to have experienced so much of what life has to offer. Next....on to Lima..Peru's capitol!
