OFF AND AWAY AGAIN

It’s cold in Florida this morning.  Strange for the end of October when it is usually balmy and beach weather.  Oh well, I am off to Atlanta and then Guatemala City, the latter of which is supposed to be in the 60’s.  I guess this cold is getting me in the mood for the Guatemalan Highlands.
This trip is taking me to Antigua and then Chichicastenango, the Peten jungle and the ruins of Tikal and then across the border to the jungles of Belize.  I will check out the ruins of  el Caracol (the snail) in the Belizean jungle before going on to Palencia which is a jumping off place for divers who want to experience “the Blue Hole”.
Atlanta today is all but vacant as Hurricane Sandy has just left her mark on the East Coast and the airports there are all closed.  For once, ATL is like a ghost town.  My flight to Guatemala is also empty.  Even the Guatemalans on board are talking about the folks who had to reschedule their flights from the New York area.
So here I sit, luckily upgraded to First Class.  My Gold Medallion status with Delta is paying off.  Even with over 50,000 flown Delta miles every year, it is harder and harder for me to get an upgrade.  Poor guys who travel more than I do.
In reality, I hope that everyone in New York and the “Delmarva Peninsula” is ok.  As I fly south to Guatemala and Belize, I am thinking about friends and family who are really going through some bad times with flooded streets, no transportation, no power and trees down.  Be well everyone. I am the lucky one even if I am cold.
