Landing in Bozeman is an awesome sight. It's the middle of June and there is still snow on the mountains. Bozeman sits in a valley between four mountain ranges...the Bridger Range, the Gallatin Range, the Tobacco Route, and the Spanish Peaks. All part of the Rocky Mountains, these snowy peaks create beautiful greenery in the late spring from the runoff of late spring snows.
When you get off the plane in the four gate airport....you are greeted by a myriad of cowboys...both pseudo and the real deal. Buses are lined up outside to take tourists to some of the several dude ranches found in the area. Some of the real cowboys even walk with that bowlegged gait from riding horses most of their lives.
Years ago when my sister moved to Bozeman...it was just a small town with a main street and little else but farmland and ranches in the outskirts. Now....13 years later....Bozeman has grown to a large city with shopping centers around every corner and all the big chain stores found in most large cities in the USA.
There are still the large ranches and farms...but now portions of them have been sold to land developers to make subdivisions and gated neighborhoods. It still takes about 10 minutes to drive through town...but now on every direction there are the subdivisions and strip malls with Home Depot and Walmarts as anchor stores. Shortly further on you reach the real ranch lands with the snowy peaks in the background.
It is June and summer in the rest of the country but in Bozeman it is still late spring and the flowers and cottonwood trees are blooming. In the low 70's during the day, it is just great weather to hike or ride into the hills . In the evenings the temps drop to the low 40s which is perfect for a fireplace and a romantic glass of wine.
Family, good weather, beautiful scenery....what could be better!
